Highlights

  • An overall 96.2% agreement between methods was observed.

  • No additional targets were detected by the FilmArray molecular panel.

  • Two HSV-1 positive samples were negative by the FilmArray molecular panel.

  • More studies are needed to adequately evaluate panel performance for HSV-1.

Abstract

We compared an FDA cleared molecular meningitis/encephalitis panel to lab developed viral PCRs and bacterial culture. Of the 67 viral PCR or bacterial culture-positive samples, 92.5% were positive for the same target by the panel. Of the 66 negative samples tested, no targets were detected by the panel, for an agreement of 96.2%.

Table 1 describes the 31 included studies (complete citations in Supplementary material, Table S3). Twenty-seven studies (87.1%) investigated the accuracy of the FilmArray ME Panel [16–42] and 4 studies (12.9%) evaluated the Simplexa HSV 1 & 2 Direct Kit [43–46]. Overall, reference test positivity was greater in Simplexa studies than FilmArray studies for HSV-1 (6.5% vs. 0.56%; p < 0.0001) and for HSV-2 (20.9% vs. 1.2%; p < 0.0001).
