Over the course of two months, repeated wound cultures were ordered and eventually produced growth of Rhodococcus equi. Appropriate antibacterial therapy was initiated to resolve the infection.OBJECTIVES: Review the history, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment of non-pulmonary R. equi infections; inform laboratory professionals of the possibility and severity of R. equi infections, and what can be done to facilitate prompt diagnosis and recovery.ABBREVIATIONS: ED= Emergency Department; WBC= White Blood Cell Count; BAP= Sheep's Blood Agar Plate
