Resistance is mediated through common, often communicable, mechanisms and has eliminated many antibiotics from the treatment armamentarium. New antimicrobial agents have been developed to address new resistance mechanisms. Effectively combating antimicrobial resistance requires that we recognize its complex and extensive impact, encourage and legislate for new antimicrobial development, and establish treatment strategies for infections caused by antimicrobial-resistant pathogens.
